Throughout my career, I’ve been a part of various chambers of commerce and have partnered with equity and funds across diverse sectors, including cryptocurrency projects. My experience with UK Trade and Investment further expanded my horizons, as I helped secure funds for many companies. Currently, I lead Borderless Consulting, a global consulting firm, and the Foundation Borderless Consulting, focusing on sustainability and environmental education.

It has been said that our mistakes can be our greatest teachers. Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

While I take my work seriously, there have been humorous moments along the way. Early in my career, a memorable moment from my career. One instance that comes to mind involved an exhilarating and somewhat comical experience of managing two concurrent meetings in different countries on the same day. The situation unfolded due to a rather unique set of circumstances. The agenda for the day had been set in such a way that it required my presence in two distinct locations, each in a different country. The challenge was to ensure that I could be physically present at both meetings without causing any delays or disruptions.

As the day approached, I meticulously planned my itinerary, coordinating with teams on the ground in both countries to ensure seamless transitions. However, no amount of planning could prepare me for the sheer intensity of the day.

The funniest part of this experience was the unexpected rush and whirlwind of activity required to make it all happen. I found myself practically sprinting through airports, navigating multiple forms of transportation, and even utilizing some creative time management strategies. At times, it felt like I was in a race against the clock.

While the situation was undoubtedly stressful, it also had an element of hilarity. Picture me dashing through terminals, engaging in a sort of real-life, high-stakes relay race between two countries. It was a situation I hadn’t anticipated but had to adapt to swiftly.

From this experience, I learned a valuable lesson about adaptability and resourcefulness. I realized that, in the face of unexpected challenges, it’s essential to stay calm, think on your feet, and be willing to embrace unconventional solutions. Additionally, it reinforced the importance of precise planning and ensuring that every detail is thoroughly checked and rechecked.

This amusing incident not only provided a memorable story to share but also served as a reminder that sometimes, the most unexpected situations can teach us the most valuable lessons about flexibility and preparation in the world of business.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

Throughout my journey, I’ve been fortunate to have several mentors who’ve guided me. One person I’m especially grateful for is Mr. Angel Aestebaranz in Spain during a transition of YA.com acquisition from Deutsche Telekom AG to Orange France Telecom Spain. They provided invaluable advice and insights that helped shape my career. One memorable lesson I learned from them was the power of resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges. Their mentorship encouraged me to persevere through tough times and remain committed to my goals.

Extensive research suggests that “purpose-driven businesses” are more successful in many areas. When your organization started, what was its vision, what was its purpose?

When I started Borderless Consulting, our vision was clear — to help businesses navigate the complexities of cross-border operations. Our purpose was to facilitate global growth while ensuring sustainability and environmental responsibility. We aimed to bridge the gap between technology and the environment, and this vision continues to drive our work.

Thank you for all that. Let’s now turn to the main focus of our discussion. Can you share with our readers a story from your own experience about how you lead your team during uncertain or difficult times?

Leading a team during uncertain times requires a blend of strategic thinking and empathy. In one instance, our organization faced a sudden market downturn. I gathered the team, acknowledged the challenges, and encouraged open communication. Together, we devised a flexible strategy to adapt to changing circumstances. Through regular updates and transparent communication, we maintained team morale and ultimately emerged stronger from the crisis.

Did you ever consider giving up? Where did you get the motivation to continue through your challenges? What sustains your drive?

Giving up was never an option for me. My motivation stems from a deep belief in the positive impact our work can have on the world. Knowing that we’re contributing to environmental sustainability and making a difference in people’s lives fuels my drive. Challenges are opportunities for growth, and they motivate me to find innovative solutions.

I’m an author and I believe that books have the power to change lives. Do you have a book in your life that impacted you and inspired you to be an effective leader? Can you share a story?

“Leaders Eat Last” by Simon Sinek deeply impacted my leadership style. The book emphasizes the importance of putting people first in leadership. It reinforced my belief that a leader’s primary role is to support and empower their team members.

What would you say is the most critical role of a leader during challenging times?

During uncertain times, a leader must provide clarity, reassurance, and a sense of purpose. By involving the team in decision-making, acknowledging their efforts, and celebrating small wins, leaders can boost morale. Additionally, maintaining an open-door policy for communication and providing opportunities for skill development can inspire and engage the team.

When the future seems so uncertain, what is the best way to boost morale? What can a leader do to inspire, motivate and engage their team?

In unpredictable times, leaders should embrace flexibility in their planning. Scenario planning, continuous monitoring of industry trends, and agile decision-making are essential. Leaders must also encourage a culture of adaptability within the organization

What is the best way to communicate difficult news to one’s team and customers?

Honesty and transparency are key when delivering difficult news. Leaders should communicate clearly, empathetically, and in a timely manner. It’s important to provide context, address concerns, and offer support. Open dialogue with both the team and customers fosters trust and helps navigate challenging situations.

How can a leader make plans when the future is so unpredictable?

The number one principle to navigate turbulent times is resilience. Resilience enables companies to bounce back from setbacks, adapt to change, and thrive in uncertainty. It’s the foundation upon which all other strategies are built.

Is there a “number one principle” that can help guide a company through the ups and downs of turbulent times?

When it comes to guiding a company through the ups and downs of turbulent times, the number one principle that stands out is “Resilience.”

Resilience embodies the ability of an organization to withstand and adapt to challenges, setbacks, and uncertainties while remaining steadfast in its pursuit of its goals. It’s the foundation upon which all other strategies and principles are built. In my experience, resilience encompasses several key aspects:

Adaptability: An organization’s ability to pivot, adjust strategies, and even reinvent itself when necessary is paramount. Adapting to changing circumstances allows a company to stay relevant and responsive to shifting market dynamics.

Leadership: Effective leadership that remains steady, empathetic, and transparent during turbulent times is vital. Leaders who can inspire and guide their teams through adversity are invaluable assets to any organization.

Innovation: Embracing innovation, seeking out new opportunities, and finding creative solutions to challenges can be a powerful source of resilience. Innovative thinking often leads to breakthroughs that propel a company forward.

Communication: Maintaining open and honest communication with both internal teams and external stakeholders fosters trust. Clear and transparent communication helps manage expectations and mitigate uncertainty.

People-Centric Approach: Prioritizing the well-being of employees and customers is fundamental. A company that values its people and ensures their needs are met tends to have more committed and loyal stakeholders.

Resilience, in essence, is the company’s ability to bounce back from setbacks, adapt to change, and thrive in uncertain times. It’s not just about surviving; it’s about emerging stronger and more capable.

Can you share 3 or 4 of the most common mistakes you have seen other businesses make during difficult times? What should one keep in mind to avoid that?

Common Mistakes to Avoid I consider that are:

a. Neglecting Employee Well-being: Some businesses focus solely on survival and overlook their employees’ well-being. This can lead to decreased morale and productivity.

b. Overreacting to Market Volatility: Knee-jerk reactions to market fluctuations can harm long-term strategies.

c. Lack of Innovation: Failing to adapt and innovate during tough times can lead to stagnation.

d. Poor Communication: Inadequate communication with both employees and customers can erode trust

Here is the primary question of our discussion. Based on your experience and success, what are the five most important things a business leader should do to lead effectively during uncertain and turbulent times? Please share a story or an example for each.

I consider that the Five Key Leadership Actions are:

a. Adaptability: Flexibility and adaptability are crucial in uncertain times. We once faced a sudden regulatory change in a key market. We quickly adjusted our strategies and remained compliant, ensuring minimal disruption.

b. Empathy: Understanding and addressing the concerns and emotions of team members during challenging periods is vital. I recall a time when a team member faced a personal crisis. We provided support and adjusted their workload, showcasing our commitment to our people.

c. Transparency: Open and honest communication builds trust. When facing financial challenges, we shared financial updates with the team, keeping them informed and engaged.

d. Innovation: We’ve embraced innovation in our operations. During a supply chain disruption, we collaborated with partners to find alternative solutions, demonstrating our commitment to delivering results.

e. Resilience: Resilience is the cornerstone of our approach. When the pandemic hit, we adapted our services to meet new market demands, proving that resilience enables growth even in adversity.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

My favorite life lesson quote: “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” — Steve Jobs. This quote resonates with me as it underscores the importance of passion and dedication in achieving excellence. Loving what you do is a powerful motivator.
