Social Media Stars Making a Social Impact: Why & How Kiara Ruth of The Banana Moon Is Helping To Change Our World

Social media is not a race: In the world of social media, it is easy to fall into the trap of comparing oneself to others and feeling the pressure to keep up or achieve certain milestones. However, it is essential to remember that social media is not a race or a competition. Each individual’s journey is unique, and everyone progresses at their own pace. Focus on your own growth, well-being, and authenticity rather than comparing yourself to others. Enjoy the process and use social media as a tool for self-expression and connection, rather than a measure of success or worth.

As a part of our series about leaders who are using their social media platform to make a significant social impact, we had the pleasure of interviewing Kiara Ruth

Kiara Ruth is a true master of multi-tasking and simplifying, effortlessly balancing her roles as a mother, wife, writer, and NC tastemaker. Her ability to remain authentic and true to her brand allows her to seamlessly transition from mom to mogul, always staying true to her story, acknowledging her faults, and embracing transparency as she grows and learns. Kiara is a proud mom to her 9-year-old son, Miles, and happily married to Dr. Terrance Ruth, a professor at NC State University. Their adorable family is completed by their lovable rescue-dog named Oakley.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

When my son Miles was just 2 years old, I embarked on a mission trip to Peru. During my time there, I grappled with the challenge of truly expressing my identity in this world, especially after going through significant life changes such as moving across the country, getting married, and becoming a parent. Upon returning to the US, I felt the need for a shift and began attending social events, where I had the chance to meet content creators, bloggers, and journalists. Their work immediately captivated me, and I realized that this could be an incredible opportunity for me to share my own unique story.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you began this career?

The story that has fascinated me the most since I started my journey is discovering my own unique voice. I firmly believe that social media provides a platform for individuals to express their authentic selves, but it can also become overwhelming in a sea of countless others. Despite this, I have managed to create my own little haven where I can freely express and embrace my true self. Rather than conforming to societal expectations dictated by social media, I have chosen to answer the call to be true to myself above all else.

It has been said that our mistakes can be our greatest teachers. Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

The biggest mistake I ever made on social media was neglecting to set up my two-step authentication, despite receiving countless reminders. Unfortunately, this oversight resulted in my Instagram account being hacked. The valuable lesson I learned from this experience is to take extra precautions and prioritize the necessary steps to safeguard yourself.

You have been blessed with success in a career path that can be challenging. Do you have any words of advice for others who may want to embark on this career path, but seem daunted by the prospect of failure?

Imposter Syndrome hits hard. Stepping into the world of social media often brings about a nagging feeling of not belonging or fearing that what I have to offer won’t be appreciated. There have been countless moments where I stumbled and made mistakes, but I’ve learned to transform those trials into triumphs and persevere. I’ve come to realize that no one can do it quite like I can, and that’s what sets me apart.

Ok super. Let’s now jump to the core focus of our interview. Can you describe to our readers how you are using your platform to make a significant social impact?

Absolutely! I proudly identify as a Christian, a survivor of sexual abuse, a food enthusiast, a passionate traveler, a devoted mother, and a loving wife. It holds great significance to me that I embody each of these roles with utmost integrity whenever I show up. Utilizing my social media platform, I have organized events for children in foster care, delivered impactful keynote speeches, dedicated my time to volunteering, and engaged in various other meaningful endeavors. I refuse to shy away from sharing my personal truths and staying true to my authentic self, and it is through this unwavering commitment that I have been able to make significant social impact in remarkable ways.

Can you tell us a story about a particular individual who was impacted by this cause?

I am incredibly grateful for Jordan from Haute House Kids. I had this idea to organize a special event for children in Foster Care in Wake County, and when I shared it with her, she embraced the concept wholeheartedly and brought it to life as the unforgettable Royal Flamingo Ball. The purpose of this event was to create a magical evening for these children, despite the challenging circumstances they face. One of the most heartwarming moments was witnessing the reunion of two sisters who hadn’t seen each other in five long years. It wasn’t just about one individual, but rather a collective group of deserving children who deserved to be seen and cherished, even if only for a few precious hours.

Was there a tipping point that made you decide to focus on this particular area? Can you share a story about that?

Although I didn’t experience life as a foster care child myself, I deeply understand the significance of having influential individuals who genuinely care for you when your parents are unable to provide the love they desire to give. Throughout my upbringing, I found myself moving from one home to another, and I am eternally grateful for the numerous people who stepped in and offered support, ensuring that I never had to enter the foster care system. Their presence made an immense difference in my life, and I will forever appreciate their selflessness and kindness.

Are there three things the community/society/politicians can do to help you address the root of the problem you are trying to solve?

It is absolutely essential to have an increased number of foster care parents, particularly those from Black and Brown communities. Currently, there is a shortage of such parents in Wake County, and it is crucial for more eligible individuals to step forward and make a difference. While this is only one this is the most important one.

Why do you think social media in particular has the power to create social change and create a positive impact on humanity?

I believe social media has the unique ability to create social change and positively impact humanity. It allows diverse individuals to connect and share their voices, fostering empathy and understanding. Social media also spreads important information rapidly, raising awareness and mobilizing action. It provides a platform for marginalized voices to be heard, empowering them to challenge narratives and advocate for social justice. Additionally, social media facilitates collective action, organizing movements and creating real-world impact. It offers educational opportunities, encouraging critical thinking and challenging societal norms. In conclusion, social media’s power lies in connecting people, raising awareness, amplifying voices, fostering action, and facilitating education, making it a potent tool for meaningful and lasting change. What specific strategies have you been using to promote and advance this cause? Can you recommend any good tips for people who want to follow your lead and use their social platform for a social good?

What are your “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why? Please share a story or example for each.

Stay true to who you are: It is crucial to remain authentic and genuine in all aspects of life. Embrace your unique qualities, values, and beliefs, and don’t compromise them for the sake of fitting in or pleasing others.

Share what makes you happy: Expressing your joy and passions with others is not only uplifting for yourself but also inspiring for those around you.

Imposter syndrome is real: Recognizing that imposter syndrome is common and acknowledging your own worth and achievements can help overcome these feelings and embrace your true capabilities.

Get out of your own way: Getting out of your own way means letting go of these self-imposed limitations, taking risks, and pursuing your goals and dreams without self-sabotage. It involves believing in yourself and taking action despite the uncertainties or challenges that may arise.

You are a person of enormous influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂

A movement I am inspired by is centered around creating a space where individuals with significant influence can connect with community-driven projects to make a positive impact. This initiative operates without the pressure of cameras, strict guidelines, or deadlines. Instead, it encourages people to come together and contribute alongside like-minded individuals, focusing solely on giving back to the community. The aim is to foster genuine connections and facilitate meaningful collaborations for the greater good, without the constraints typically associated with such endeavors.

Is there a person in the world, or in the US whom you would love to have a power lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this, especially if we tag them. 🙂

Elaine Welteroth, let me tell you, I came across her book some years ago and instantly connected with her story. She is an absolute powerhouse, juggling the roles of boss, mom, and wife with such finesse. I am in awe of her style, grace, and most importantly, how she unapologetically shows up as her authentic self. She is a true inspiration to me.
